New Marking Option for Advanced Ampleye® Lens Designs

by Bethany Peebles, FAAO, ABOC, NCLE-AC, Executive Director of Consultation Services

Custom-aligned multifocal optics, quadrant-specific landings, and microvaults require patients to insert their Ampleye scleral lenses with a particular orientation. Until now, we have provided a standard black dot (Fig. 1). This marking is placed opposite the engraved Right or Left identifier (R/L). Unfortunately, the black dot wears off over time, requiring the practitioner to reapply the dot to the lens or instruct the patient to use the engraved R/L for reference, which is often too small for the patient to see easily.

Now, a more permanent and visible marking is available upon request. In place of the black dot, a lens can be laser etched with a unique pattern that is visible when held up to the light (Fig. 2). Even patients with compromised corneas and decreased vision have been able to locate the marking and properly insert the lens easily. This unique marking option should alleviate the frustration previously caused by the non-permanent nature of traditional black dots for patients and practitioners.
